Betsy, a kindergarten teacher and fellow blogger, is hosting a round up of chalketry, poetry in chalk, at her monthly Chalkabration. On the last day of Write your Way youth writing camp a few weeks ago, we wrote haiku in chalk or chalku for the parents to read as they walked to the classroom for Author’s Chair. Here’s a sampling.
Roses are in bloom
Bees buzz around the garden
All is peaceful
–Anna
Shadows dapple, splayed
beneath the crooked oak’s arms
Swaying though untouched
–Collin
Trees blow in the wind
Growing and growing until
They all pass away
–Jered
A shady oak tree.
The perfect place on a hot day
A cool breeze blowing its leaves

What a terrific idea for a ‘welcome’ to your audience, Margaret. The writers wrote some wonderful words!
I love them all, but Collin’s is my favorite! Makes me miss my big front yard oak tree back home!
Terrific writers, Margaret! Like Mary Lee, Collin’s particularly struck me with its very fresh imagery.
Margaret-This is wonderful! I love the idea of greeting parents as they arrive. I enjoy taking my students out to chalk on the front sidewalk at school for just that reason! All the students did lovely work but Anna’s poem touched me. I felt like I was sitting in the garden with her…all is peaceful.
Love these. SHADOW is my favorite, “shadows move slowly.” Thank you for joining in the chalkabration. Come back July 31st too!
