Ever since a hurricane sent a water oak through the roof of Pawpee’s house crippling her grandfather, Blessen has lived with her mother, and grandfather Pawpee in a FEMA trailer. An accident involving her pet chicken, Blue, pushes Blessen into discoveries about faith, death, and her heritage.
Praise for Blessen
BLESSEN, by Margaret Simon, is as beautiful and profound a book as you can possibly give a grandchild to read. My 10 year old granddaughter was sent one the same day I read it. I was delighted to see her read it for several reasons. First, it’s a delicate introduction to the complex culture of South Louisiana. Second, it addresses the complexities of life as well as culture, in a story that is not threatening to the young adult world view. And third, the gentle suspense is unremitting. I read the book in one swoop, with only one 5 minute break. I found that BLESSEN enlarged my own grasp of (and forgiveness for) humanity. And I’m so happy I can now pass along to children and youth this new expansion in my own love of the world.

Blessen LaFleur’s life is once again taking more twists and turns than the bayou she lives near. Blessen is growing up and taking on the responsibility of raising a hen, Sunshine, who is broody and bothered. In this sequel, Blessen meets Harmony who is homeless and missing her mother. Blessen’s nurturing nature takes hold. She tries to save Harmony from the despair of a strange foster home by taking her on an adventure. Together they call themselves “the guardians of nature.” When an accident reveals Harmony to the grown-ups in Blessen’s life, they both learn of the strength of family and love.
