As August began, the Inklings sat side by side in real person in the WhisperShout studio of our own Heidi Mordhorst. Linda Mitchell provided junk journals and collage materials. I knew this Poetry Friday would be an Inkling challenge given to us by Molly Hogan involving maps in some way.
So I played with paper, paint, pictures, and words. This is what happened. I like it. I don’t understand it, but I like it.
I am reminded of one of my favorite poems by Naomi Shihab Nye.

Here are links to other Inkling poems. Check them out:

as one who loves Maps, I absolutely adore the map collage and poem. It makes me think of the postcard, poetry fest, and how this would be a great way to create small collages onto postcards. I was in a craft store recently and saw that there are travel stickers and travel, scrapbook papers with miniature motifs on them and now you have inspired me to go back and think about getting some of these materials and simply stopping what is going on around me and creating. Thank you for this inspiration from the inklings
I could not fix my punctuation and capitalization – I don’t know why
Yay to more art about travel and maps…the metaphors are so rich and timeless.
oooooh, I love that messy background underpinning the beautifully arranged words. Isn’t it grand that you have created something that’s felt more than understood? That’s poetry, baby! (said in my best Heidi voice). I think my summer has been a wild fly by! I so look forward to the next one, already.
Unexpected tears jumped into my eyes. I would definitely tear maps to be with the five of you again. (tear/tear…hmm…)
Yes. Tears and tear. I’m trying hard to be happy it happened and not sad it had to end.
Lovely Margaret, wonderful sense of circular movement, playful, and those bones in there add feelings of fantastical long ago beginnings, thanks!
Beautiful collage! If you come back, I will have to meet you all! The Naomi poem is perfect. xo
Yes, please!
Your collage creates such whimsical and playful mood, Margaret. It does bring light. Thank you for sharing “Torn Map.” I agree with Mary Lee about tearing maps to be together again.
I so love this– “I like it. I don’t understand it, but I like it.” Your map poem is beautiful and fun. Love “Torn Map” too. “I’d tear a map / and be right next to you.”
I’m so glad you shared your first poem, even if you don’t understand it. It feels perfect in its ambiguity and your collage is the perfect background. “Torn Map” was new to me, and resonates with both your poem and with my feelings about our recent time together. I like Mary Lee’s keen observation “tear/tear…hmmm….”
You all are lucky to have had the time together, nothing sweeter than to talk without tech! I love the prompt & the way you’ve created something to ponder, Margaret, a world we rarely can figure out, but want to! The Nye poem, lovely, too!
Ooh! I love your collage (and the Naomi Shihab Nye poem)! 🙂 I love that you all did collages together! What fun!
Margaret, your map collage poem is an enchanting, creative artpiece with a poetic trail from top to bottom. Your fun element brings light into your collage in a magical way. It must have been so much fun being with your Inkling colleagues. Have a wonderful weekend.
Maps are for dreaming, aren’t they! And collages!
Margaret, I love your collage. It makes me want to take a flight of fancy. 🙂
And the Naomi Shihab Nye poem is lovely.
So happy for all of you Inklings that you met in person! ❤️
I watched this get made out of the corner of my real eye and yet hadn’t been able to appreciate it. What whimsy! What wisdom! Here’s how I read it:
Wild Fly By by MargaretWorld which has its beginnings in the enchantmentof bones’ being, underwater living—Let there be light!

I’m still enjoying the echoes of our shared presence here. Thank you for everything!
Yes! That’s how I read it too. What a gift to create together.
Oh shoot–formatting didn’t stick! Ask if you want to know how I tore and taped it back together…
