“Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product.” Eleanor Roosevelt
“Why do you seek the living among the dead?” Luke 24:5
We pursue joy,
chase her like butterflies
through the fields–
a futile search.
Like the rainbow over the horizon,
Joy recedes
farther and farther
from our grasp. When we seek felicity for others,
joy slowly tiptoes in.
She comes in with the wind,
hardly noticeable, always there.–Margaret Simon
Margaret,
Isn’t that so true? We chase joy and it seems unobtainable, yet we slow down and take time for others then there it is.
Loved the images created by lines like “chase her like butterflies” and “comes in the wind.”

The Eleanor Roosevelt quote connects perfectly with your poem. Wonderful message – seek ye first the Kingdom of God by reaching out to others, and joy will sneak in!
I love how joy tiptoes in while we’re busy being kind to others and helping them find joy. What a beautiful poem. Your words surround me this morning. Thank you.
I love the beauty, simplicity, and truth of your poem. Your words bring joy!
The kindnesses we share with others brings it back to us. Beautiful message in your poem, Margaret.
Margaret, joy tiptoes in instead of me chasing it. That rings true! Thanks for the gentle joy you sent my way.
Joy is a by-product of giving. Joy is a by-product of service. Joy is a by-product of fulfillment. I love the Eleanor Roosevelt quote. And how your poem creatively tied the pieces together.
