I am an early riser. So most of my haiku writing happens early in the morning. Yesterday I wrote on Laura Purdie Salas’s Thursday 15 Words or Less post in response to an image of a gorilla statue.

I could be a bear
dreaming of spring’s abundance
safely hiding now.
Charlie sits in my lap while I write. Do you know that a sleeping dog has a certain scent?
Today I read Jane Yolen’s poem for the day. I stole her line, “I know you by what you hold.” This one is for my husband of 34+ years.

Love! My sleeping dog –even sleeping brings me so much comfort and joy. She’s a Christmas carol all on her own.
Aww, that is so sweet. The scent of your sleeping dog and your husband holding things, so adorable.
#23…so lovely…LOVEly. Yes, I know that dog scent. I love knowing that you are half a country away and as close to as a heartbeat as we write haiku. Sometimes that is my one moment of peace in the day, so I savor it. Sending virtual hugs!
Margaret, your poem reminds me of the scent my little dog used to have while sleeping in my lap. Though he is gone, I can still recall that smell. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful, Margaret! I can smell that sleepy dog smell right now from the creature snoozing at my feet (who had a bath last week, so not as overpowering as usual!) I kind of prefer the coffee smell (but I love that you’ve included both…)
Nice, Margaret! Especially love what you did with Jane’s line.
Margaret- I love these! All of them! I could be a bear too, in hibernation in a warm cave right now– I wouldn’t care if I never had to go out into the cold. And the one about your husband. I immediately thought of my son, whose beautiful hands held a football forever, and are now way, way, way too empty. I may have to lift that line! And nothing better than a sleeping dog! Thanks for these! Merry Christmas!
Beautiful, especially the one “I know you by what you hold…” Wishing you and yours a blessed Christmas!
