Sorry, my Poetry Friday folks! I forgot I was hosting. You see, yesterday was our last day of school, and there were other things occupying my limited brain space. But here I am and here you are. Link with the button at the bottom of this post.
Each month on the first week of the month, a group of us bloggers post for Spiritual Thursday. We are a group of open-minded thinkers who enjoy exploring what God means in our lives. Irene Latham coordinates our group. Last month she wrote this in her post about Reaching.
Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam.” What beauty there is in that breath between those two fingers! And what makes it beautiful to me is the anticipation of touch, the reaching, the beauty and openness of that moment– before we know what happens next. –Irene Latham
Those words moved me. A poem appeared as response. I love when that happens. Thanks, Irene.
Breath–
one small space
as God reaches
to Adam
hanging high
above
turned up heads.Eyes cannot focus
on such a small space
so far away,
yet Michelangelo
placed it there,
an inch between them.In that space
I can rest
suspended,
floating between
God’s hand
and my own.Nothing
becomes
everything.–Margaret Simon
Dear Margaret – happy end of the school year! And you know what? I love this poem even more today than I did before. Beautiful! Thanks for sharing and for hosting and for being YOU. xo
When I was linking to your site, I saw all the posts I missed. I’m glad school is out so I can catch up on my blog reading. You inspire me.
I love this poem, Margaret. Glad you shared it here today.
Can’t blame you for forgetting – there’s a lot on a plate at the end of school! Thanks for squeezing this in last minute! Have a great day!
Thanks. Luckily, I had the idea of sharing this poem today anyway. OK, I’m done kicking myself.
Margaret — The third stanza is so moving. It’s an image of faith.
Gorgeous poem–poetry is perfect to express that space. Can’t add link from phone 😦 When I click on it, it just opens the image of the link collector, but no space to add anything…
No worries. I added it for you.
Thank you so much! I just got home and went to add link from my laptop, and it notified me I was already added. So weird that it won’t link from my phone. Thanks, Margaret!
What a beautiful poem, Margaret. It is a perfect response to the prompt. I’m with Laura – that third stanza… Also the final three lines. It brings a comforting sense of peace and encouragement.
Enjoy your holidays!! 🙂
Beautiful, Margaret. I hope you enjoy your calm, quiet space between school years. I bet the emotion of the last day of school is quite a hurricane. I love the last stanza of your poem where you set our expectations on their head. Thanks for hosting.
Hosting Poetry Friday on the final day of school! I understand your forgetting. Your poem is lovely, especially that final “Nothing becomes everything”. Thanks for hosting and enjoy this first weekend of your summer!

What a lovely poem. I do love that painting (saw it in person years ago), and am so glad Irene shared her thoughts about the significance of that space, that reaching, that moment of uncertainty. Your title, “Breath of God” is perfect.
Thanks for hosting today, Margaret!

Margaret, your poem is a wonderful opening to my day. When in yoga, I will remember that God’s breath rests upon mine. “In that space/I can rest suspended,/floating between/God’s hand/and my own.” May you enjoy a glorious Memorial Day Weekend, knowing that you can relax and enjoy your down time.
Thanks for hosting, Margaret! Enjoyed your poem very much, especially “In that space
I can rest
suspended,
floating between
God’s hand
and my own.” Hope you have a rejuvenating, fulfilling summer!
“In that space” – so much potential! Thank you for the reminder and for hosting! Happy summer break! =)
I hope you have space and time to write more beauty like this one, Margaret. Happy end of a rich school year!
Adding my voice to the chorus of praise— that third stanza, Margaret… I want to stay there in that moment for as long as I possibly can. Thank you for hosting on this first day of academic summer!
This is beautiful, Margaret. Such a reminder of the soulfulness of space, of making space, leaving space, encouraging space. I wish this for you for summer… xx
Beautiful poem Margaret! I especially like how this poem slows us down and helps us reflect on ourselves and what’s around us, two areas in our bustling life we often neglect, thanks for this place of solace. Thanks also for hosting Poetry Friday! Hope you get to take in some sultry summer meanderings . . .
Not a pun, but I found your poem touching. Enjoy your summer break and keep writing!
Those last 3 lines are so important! Beautifully written, Margaret.
Kudos for your pulling off hosting and ending the school year. Inspirational to have something written to share in a pinch. Lovely ideas shared today.
This is beautiful, Margaret. I love this final thought: “Nothing becomes everything.” Possibilities are everywhere! Happy summer!
