It was one of those all day rains. One of my last days of our holiday break, and I was bored. I cleaned out cabinets, watched shows on Netflix, made a fire in the fireplace, and played around with magazine collage. During the hectic days of teaching, I crave this kind of time. Funny how our minds work. On this day, I was restless and wishing for the rain to stop.
100 % Chance of Rain
(with a borrowed line from Robert Frost “Revelation”)
Wind blown ripples
the water,
whipped like frothed cappuccino,Rain slants, shower bending,
branches leave the trees.
Saturated earth bleeds
muddy moisture.Oh, the agitated heart.
The lemons hang, ripe and wet.But I am still today,
quieted by the storm.
Listening, longing
for the sun.(c) Margaret Simon
So very evocative – I feel as though I was there! Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
Beautiful collage gathering, Margaret & oh I’d love a rainy day, wishing we could trade some hours! Love this: “But I am still today,/quieted by the storm.” Happy New Year!
Still here….waiting and longing. A lovely response to your day. And, that journal page is really cool! I love how it compliments the photo of the lemons.
Thank you for sharing your collage. I am working on my OLW this weekend. I love the photo as well.
I especially love your last stanza. There is something about a storm that brings stillness and longing. Well done!
Trust you to take boredom and a rainy day and create beauty! Something about those lemons really gets to me, and I love your collage.
I just read this. It’s Sunday and we’re home from our vacation. So much to do before tomorrow and everything that starts again – and then your poem. A little oasis. I love the pairing of Frost’s line with yours: “Oh, the agitated heart./
The lemons hang, ripe and wet.” That image will stay with me. Thank you.
Your poem and collage are lovely, Margaret. I love these lines: Listening, longing/for the sun.” We had rain all day yesterday and I was very content to spend the hours reading, but a bit of sunshine would be welcome!
Lovely…there is nothing quite like the peace that comes from listening quietly to a storm (especially when I’m warm and dry inside), but I can relate to your restlessness as well. We’ve had a long streak of rainy days.
Your poem is lovely Margaret. I especially like your stillness in a storm.
I can relate to your poem, we’ve had so many overcast, cloudy, rainy, dismal days–but I like how the weather brought your,
“Listening, longing
for the sun.”
And these two lines are give such movement to your poem,
“Oh, the agitated heart.
The lemons hang, ripe and wet.”
