This is my last week of school and a perfect time for reading picture books and writing about dreams. I read aloud Happy Dreamer by Peter Reynolds.

Peter Reynolds wields his word-magic wand in this book. Near the end, there is a double flap that opens up to reveal multiple dreamers and ways to be happy.

Here’s a list poem of some of them:
Celebration Happy
Stage Dreamer
Family Happy
Fierce Dreamer
Ocean Happy
Dreamy Dreamer
Make a Difference Happy
Civic Dreamer
Foot Stomping Happy
Crazy Dreamer
Kindness Happy
Sunny Dreamer
I tried a simple writing prompt “What kind of dreamer are you?” Breighlynn used a repeated line and showed me the way to a form.
I am a wild dreamer
seeing things
others cannot
playing with invisible lions
petting the prettiest jaguars
What will I see next?I am a wild dreamer
playing with hippos
when taking a bath
riding on alligators
when floating in the pool.I am a fierce dreamer
fighting dragons one day
protecting the king, the next.I am a fierce dreamer
Breighlynn, 3rd grade
standing guard at the castle.
If I die,
oh well,
it’s just a dream.
Madison used a free form and found her way to her love of art.
I am a thinking dreamer–
Madison, 5th grade
Worlds and tales threaded through my daydreams,
a tapestry or another world
where the limit is my own self.
These worlds of mine are
drawn,
put to paper,
and solidified within
my own
mind.
What kind of dreamer are you?
Wow! Beautiful poems by your dreamers. I love the idea of a wild dreamer. And I super identify with the thinking dreamer. A wonderful prompt.
These poems are just gorgeous. Love this prompt. I want to be these kinds of dreamers, and maybe a few others as well.
Great prompt and moving poems about dreamers, thanks for sharing all of them Margaret. And I love the inspirational book “Happy Dreamer” thanks for sharing all!
Lovely! Hope you have a great summer and enjoy a well-deserved rest! Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
Let’s all be word dreamers! Breighlynn and Madison are leading the way. đŸ˜€
You’ve got some talented dreamers! Happy summer dreaming time.
You are a splendid teacher, Margaret. Thanks for sharing.
Cool prompt! I like Breighlynn’s reassuring ending and Madison’s tapestry metaphor. So many ways of being a dreamer!
Yes, summer-wild summer-fierce dreaming–may it come our way too! We were at the zoo on Thursday and B’s animal poem is just perfect. I think I forgot to say Sunday that I applied for a GT position, primary talent development coach. No word yet at all, so I’m not hopeful, but thought you’d like to know how your work has inspired me!
Margaret, I am an ocean happy dreamer whose thoughts are inspired by a jeweled seascape. How wonderful that you used Peter Reynold’s book to inspire a grouping of dream catching poems. I am so impressed with the children’s work.
I love the poems by your young dreamers. And the end of the school year is a wonderful time to dream about all sorts of things. What a wonderful book to bring to your students! And to us!!! Thanks.
This is a perfect end-of-year prompt, Margaret! I love how Breighlynn structured her poem, but this line from Madison’s poem is my favorite: “Worlds and tales threaded through my daydreams/a tapestry or another world/where the limit is my own self” are my favorite.
I am a free-time dreamer as of Friday! Hooray for dreams and hooray for summer!
Happy Summer, Mary Lee. My husband calls it the big weekend. WE have two more days…
