Recently I listened to the podcast “We Can Do Hard Things” with Glennon Doyle. The theme was Fun. Their definition of fun came from Abby Wombach who said that fun is when you enter into an activity without knowing the outcome. That is the definition of every day for a toddler.
Monday was the first day of Camp Mamoo. (Thomas (21 months) calls me “Mamoo”) He and his mother, daughter Katherine, are visiting and cousin Leo, 2 1/2, spent the night. Leo has come to know that when Mamére takes him someplace, it will be fun. “Going to ‘nother fun place.”
“Today we are going to a farm.”
“Yay!”
When we passed a horse, Leo yelled, “I saw a horse. That’s great!”
The farm is in nearby St. Martinville. Belle Ècorce Farms sells goat cheese in a small portable using the honor system, a locked money box. A small town luxury.
When we got to the farm, we walked around to see some of the animals. The boys were mesmerized. Or scared.
The loose animals, rooster, chickens, and geese were particularly frightening. A billy goat in a fence came up and climbed onto the fence, expecting something good to eat.
“You don’t have to get close. Just watch.” The boys stood still as statues to watch the billy goat.

I haven’t decided yet if this was a fun experience. The boys were easy. They stayed close to us, no run and chase games. We talked on the way home.
“What did we see at the farm?”
“Moo,” says Thomas.
“Umm, rooster!” says Leo.
All I know for sure is that a day with toddlers is a day of Fun.
Fun is a great topic that we need more of! Thank you for asking this question and reflecting today.
I just love thinking about Camp Mamoo and my favorite line in this post is “Going to ‘nother fun place.” How delightful to be associated with fun. PS I’m still thinking about Abby Wombach’s definition of fun. I don’t think I agree. But now I’m pondering what my definition would be. Great post!
Precious….those little green boots. Time with Mamoo is the best!
Fun…we need more of it! Living life through toddler eyes is a great start! (I love grandparenting–every part of it is fun!)
How wonderful for you to have your two grandsons together! I love “Camp Mamoo!” I also love “Going to ‘nother fun place.” That photo of your grandsons in their puddle boots, both with curly blonde hair and holding your hands is precious. From the back they look like they could be twins. I love the joy you send in this post. It reminds me of my girls as toddlers in their puddle boots and my niece and nephew as toddlers. In fact, when my sister came for a visit from a different state, we brought my niece and nephew to an outdoor zoo/park. My nephew at 2 1/2 was scared of the goats and deer running everywhere wanting to be fed. However, my niece at 4 1/2 loved feeding a goat, which almost knocked my sister and niece down. I agree it’s always fun with toddlers. Thank for your post.
How special! I love that photo of you holding the hands of Thomas and Leo. So very precious. Yes, to be sure fun is doing anything with beloved toddlers. I love the reporting of their comments and actions. So sweet!
“All I know for sure is that a day with toddlers is a day of Fun.” That statement is one to embellish upon for unexpected fun is what grandmothers receive from their little ones. I love how you started your slice: about days with toddlers and those little green boots are adorable. Yesterday, I was back at my daughter’s house for my first sleepover since we moved. The little one was sick again and I am the designated family sitter/soother. This morning the house is quiet but soon the fun will begin.
Beautiful…grandma’s are supposed to be The Fun Ones and it looks like yours are blessed with a great one. 🙂
A day with toddlers IS a day of fun – and joy! “Camp Mamoo” is too precious! I love this variation of the beautiful “Mamere.” I have never thought of fun as defined this way by Wombach, but I am inclined to agree.
