Winter is here and in many places around the US, mounds of snow. In the deep south, we are expecting an Arctic blast later this week that may (accent on the word may) bring a mix of winter precipitation. The last time I was able to build any semblance of a snowman was in March of 1988. This is not true for my friend Molly in Maine. She posted a most amazing snowgirl that her daughter, Lydia, had created using old garden leftovers to accessorize. Let’s entertain our child-muse today and write a small poem about her. Feel free to give her a name.
Betty White
Blonde pom-pom poofs
Margaret Simon, draft
fool you into thinking
this girl is ditsy.
Don’t
underestimate a girl
with sunlight
in her hair. She’s a star
in her own galaxy.
loving the “don’t underestimate”. That’s perfect! I’m on my way to school. I’ll be poeming in the car.
Margaret, how clever! She’s a star in her own galaxy. The bold confidence will fuel my day. Here’s what I came up with:
Comfortable curves
tousled curls,
an asymmetric face.
No mirrors in her
open world,
just arms spread
wide with grace.
“Arms spread wide with grace” is my favorite line about this unique beauty.
Love this!
Lovely Susan, such a warm, welcoming hug from your poem, thanks!
I love your accurate description of Snowgirl! And those welcoming arms. Would that we all could have such grace!
Love the image of arms spread wide–you’ve captured the snowgirl!
I love the relaxed and accepting feel of this whole poem, topped with grace.
Snowflake Susie, Frosty Choreographer
Arms open, she’s calling
“dance with me!”
Snuggle, sway, sashay,
we’ll only have this day,
to let our dreams cascade,
hear the music play,
create our snow ballet.
Come, now,
and dance with me!
draft, Janet Clare Fagal
*hat tip to Orleans !
(A true favorite from long ago!)
Love the alliteration and rhyme. I’ll share this with students today.
Thanks, Margaret. That’s nice to hear! I did write it for them. Do you know Orleans’ Dance with Me? I loved it from the beginning and now when amazing Loren Barrigar plays it on his guitar, it is even more special. You can google or find him on Youtube if you want to hear a virtuoso guitarist in the Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel style.
What a delightful invitation with perfect word choice throughout!
Love thiking of snowgirl as a dancer. “We’ll only have this day to let our dreams cascade” is beautiful.
Thanks, Rose. Some days the words flow…..this was fun to think about my granddaughter and how she would be inside a snow maiden!
Such a playful offer to dance away the day, lovely Janet, thanks!
Your title–perfect intro to this sashaying snow ballet!
Oooh, I love that she is dancing away this day – we only have this day – and she may. And she’s making the most of her premelting time.
Happy in the face of fleeting time.
Margaret,
A star in her own galaxy! Oh yes, don’t let those blonde locks fool you. One of a kind that Betty White. I love how Molly used dried hydrangea for hair. We only get to build snowmen if the temperature cooperates, often no. We are in the snowbelt, true, but it’s usually so cold we can’t pack the snow. A favorite activity for me has been snowshoeing which I have not done in a while but love. Not as aerobic as cross country skiing, at least for me, but wonderful.
snowgirl
magical snowgirl
no two flakecells same inside
authentic, unique
Flakecells is a wonderful new word.
Nice!
She is a unique snowgirl. Fun!!
flakecells–love it!
There is a bit of magic about her…and about every snowgirl.
Love your ending Margaret,
“She’s a star
in her own galaxy.”
Fills me with smiles! And wonderful wintery wonderland pic from Molly-love it, so fills one’s imagination.
Here’s my poem,
MIND-BENDING IMAGINATION
Snow portals await
in hydrangea snowperson’s
swirling-round wonder-ground,
blink twice
and enter…
What a lovely invitation!
Love that first line–snow portals is a perfect doorway to your poem.
Ah Michelle, I would love to blink and enter snowgirl’s portal for a while. And we could find out if she knows Frosty!!
I like how you shifted the focus to the “portal” and especially like the specific directions to “blink twice/and enter…”
Those hydrangeas just catch the eye and remind us that spring is right around the corner and the snow is only temporary,
Just like life.
“Swirling round, wonder- ground” is a delightful rhyme.
I love so much about this post and everyone’s responses. “A star in her own galaxy” says so much. Thank you Margaret and Molly.
Those flirty eyes
and cockeyed smile
excite,
invite –
“Come dance with me awhile.”
Oh yes, that invitation to the dance, her flirty eyes and cockeyed smile, adorable, Rose. This goes so well with Molly’s photo!
Perfect portrait, Rose!
She does have a flirtatious look, doesn’t she!? I love how you and Janet saw her as a dancer.
Her eyes are flirty! Thanks for dancing with poetry today.
Winter’s sun
softens a snowgirl
with dreams of green
and gold.
Oh that winter snowgirl sounds like me, those dreams of green and gold! Yet I love the beauty of a snow storm when it ends and also like the feeling of hunkering down, but ah spring, summer, fall, all so wonderful.
Oh those “dreams of green/and gold.” Love it! (And Buffy I am now totally addicted to writing small poems from my wordle games! Thanks for that brilliant idea. I really needed it!)
Such nice s-sounds and the lovely dream.
I’m afraid
I’ve been stiff-armed
A cold welcome…
Nonetheless
I am jealous
Of her buff and
puffy hair
Oh that puffy hair, isn’t it luscious? I think she needs some red lips, to give off a bit more of that Marilyn Monroe vibe, but surely I can see Betty White, too. It is so much fun to be able to make a nice snow person, but this one is definitely a girl with some attitude and fun! Like your poem, Karen.
Clever word choice here!
“buff and puffy hair” is such a signature of this snowgirl.
Margaret: love the “Betty White”… ;0)

I’ve been watching Project Runway😳
How fun that your response was influenced by your recent viewing habits! I also like your use of “iced it” here. Well done!
Ha! Great connection to Project Runway!
“This snow person iced it -” yes… love it!
Margaret, I love your poetic response to Lydia’s snowgirl. I’m especially fond of “Don’t/underestimate a girl/with sunlight/in her hair.” I’m so glad you shared this photo today and extended the creative fun 🙂

Your rhymes are spot on! And you know all the parts, rose-hips? Working in the word brief is just right. Thanks for being such a wonderful poet-partner and sharer of photos.
Oh, I landed in the wrong place! I posted mine in the Facebook group with a photo. Now there are so many comments I’m overwhelmed!
Yo–
can’t a snowbro
prance out with
his glorymane
tamed up in puffs
against the cold
white world?
Thanks to Molly & co for the image and to Margaret for the impetus. All of them are interesting…”rose hips” and “blossombare”!
Love the word “glorymane”! Anywhere you land is just fine. Thanks for sharing.
Margaret, thanks for a fun photo today! ….a star in her own galaxy would be a nice solitary place to be sometimes!
