Morning walks are getting darker and darker as the time changes, as the days shorten. Recently I have been sharing the dark with a few ghouls and goblins. There seem to be more Halloween decorations this year, and the bigger the better. Usually I post a photo of nature, so today is a bit of a digression. See where this photo may take you: an imaginary Halloween tale or a memory of one Halloween night. Post your own musings in the comments and encourage other writers with your responses. And always, thanks for being here.

Spiders the size of a child,
Margaret Simon, draft
Jack-o-lanterns glow like the moon,
Dress up like a bumblebee,
Come join in the glee.
It’ll be Halloween soon!
What a fun decoration and a happy poem to go with it!
front lawn harvest moon
artificial satellite
grounded and anchored
Nice haiku, Mary Lee. I like the idea of having the harvest moon in my front yard!
Yes, to be grounded and anchored! To keep the spirit of caring, fun, treating one another and being neighborly all year long and across the world. At least these moments of respite in the long dark night can delight many. You captured the photo beautifully in your haiku, Mary Lee!
Nice haiku. I love “artificial satellite.”
Love those last two lines!
Grounded and anchored – what delight to have the harvest moon close by.
What a cute poem and photo, Margaret!
Alone at night in the dark?
Fear not!
Just grin
And your light within
Will see you home.

A lovely closing couplet there, Jane!!! Would that we would all find that homeward bound internal light and let it guide us always!!
Janet
Great advice!
Ooo. I love that light within. Made me grin😜
Love the shine of the light within!
I totally agree with you, Jane. Margaret penned an adorable poem for children. I have to laugh that this Halloween might not be the place to walk in the dark. A bear has been spotted walking the community. Your last line is a beautiful thought.
Ah Halloween. I loved to dress up but only in fun (not scary or ghoulish costumes! Think princess or book character like Beth from Little Women.) I think I am seeing more decorations, too. Perhaps it is post covid cocoon emerging?
A Halloween Night to Remember
We will see: (I wanted this line in italics.)
An orange toothy grin
a witch out for a spin
a full moon shining
ghouls and goblins flying
pumpkins carved and lit
on porches where they sit
ready for the night
smiles so warm and bright
a gentle ghost, or scary bat
a unicorn or Cheshire cat
will traipse along our happy lane
and never mind a drop of rain!
Janet Clare Fagal, draft
So fun! And isn’t it the truth — so many years the Halloween costumes are hidden by raincoats or (on the years it snows) heavy coats!
What a happy skippy rhyme!
So many nice images–and not to be stopped by the rain!
The possibility of rain may not pose a threat to children but how about the Moms? I really like the insertion of an advance word (traipse) that adds to the vocabulary – great word choice, Janet. This is going to be an adorable poem for the little ones.
Yes and I snuck in their 2022 costumes as in ghost and unicorn!! Still need a few touches but ok. Well, adults will bring umbrellas. Kids will NOT care unless it is pouring, right. Beware of the bear. Oh my. Thanks, Carol. I have always tried to elevate vocabulary in a friendly or engaging or “let’s notice this together and think about it way”…..it worked. I had a great vocab program or two I developed. Used to share at ILA and NCTE. Hope to get back on the circuit eventually. Hugs to you.
Hi Margaret,
I can never figure out where to send you a comment!! I love all the delight that Halloween has for our grandkids. And the fun decorations just add to all that. I am still making our grandson’s ghost, trust me that is not an easy one. But down the street the new neighbors in their neighborhood, hung some small ghosts in their sweet low tree and when we drove past last weekend we kept saying they were his cousins and relatives. It was just plain fun to hear their happiness. To me the candy is secondary and their mom regulates what they can have, so the experience is nice.
My grands love dressing up any day of the week. Leo got a pirate costume and wore it for 48 hours straight. Stella and I will be ladybugs. It’s such a joy to spend time with them in their imaginary worlds.
wisps of clouds scuttle
through the jack-o-lantern moon
winking at the gloom
(inspired by your jack-o-lanterns glow like the moon, Margaret!)
I like how you turned that phrase.
Great opening line, Buffy.
Yes to wisps and scuttle and winking at the gloom. I love your haiku. I think it can be a great mentor poem for elem kids!!!
Margaret, this photo has such a whimsical flair to it. I never saw this type of balloon sitting in anyone’s yard. Your poem is a delight. “Spiders the size of a child” is a fun line to open with.
I finally got my poem up at my PF post today. I blended the photo into a dansa poem. See https://beyondliteracylink.blogspot.com/2022/10/dansa-poem-poetrypals-challenge.html
