Thank you to Two Writing Teachers for creating an amazing community of writers and a safe, welcoming space to write and share.
The week of Earth Day was a spring break for my grandson Leo. Because he has working parents, he went to his former daycare for the week. We are not sure if that is where he learned about Earth Day, but he came home and wrote in his special journal (the one with the soft cover). Leo is in kindergarten, so he is new to reading and writing, but this grandmother/ teacher/ writer sees the potential of his writing. If nothing else, it will go in the archives of his earliest writing.
My interpretation: “How Do You Help The Earth”
Do not litter. Do not throw trash on the ground. Do not pick the plants. Do not kill the plant. Do not kill the environment. Do not cut the trees because the trees help us breathe.
How do we help the people?
We can help people walk and help people get things if they can’t reach it. We can help do the remote when people can help people keep up the house and we can all help people get ready for a party. We can help people if they have a broken leg. You can help people if they are not tall enough to put up the lights.
How do you share? You can give away something.
Keeping the world good. by Leo, age 6 (kindergarten)
Wow the writing and I could read a bunch of it. SO much for a Kdg child…..and his ideas are wonderful. Love what you did with it, Margaret. It is impressive for sure, to me. And it is his own writing in his journal with the soft cover (love this) , from his ideas of caring. What wonderful role models he has had. It’s just a beautiful thing. AND the underlining of the words he knows he can’t spell, I assume? So mature for a 6 yr old I think especially since he is in that curr. and not a first grade yet. I think I know where he gets the writing gene from!!
WOW! Leo is in good hands with you, his “grandmother/ teacher/ writer”!! So glad you captured his Earth Day 2025 ponderings on your blog. Can’t wait to see where he is writing will take him next!
I taught kindergarten for six years. As I read Leo’s words I thought, “Wow, here is a budding writer and thinker. I’d love to see what he creates as he grows and learns.”
Ah, I see he is an environmental activist already! That’s wonderful – – and a writer to boot! He worked hard on this writing, I can tell – – it shows he has a heart for it!
It is clear to me that Leo is headed down the path towards a lifetime of reading, writing, and environmental awareness, His last line, “Keeping the world good,” is a wish and a prayer for us all.
I am awed by the way young children pick up on the need to be good stewards of the Earth. My second graders have included lines such as “I hope people never litter again” in their poems. Leo’s work here is incredible! I know it makes your Mamere heart so proud!
What a young man! I love that he chose to write in his special journal. Words to be treasured for sure. Kudos to those who teach and guide this young man. Teachers and family united together can inspire this new generation.
Margaret Simon lives on the Bayou Teche in New Iberia, Louisiana. She teaches gifted elementary students, writes poetry and children's books. Welcome to a space of peace, poetry, and personal reflection. Walk in kindness.

THIS is why I have any kind of hope for the future.
