What song is playing in your head today? I find if I take a minute to sit in silence, there is always a song playing in my mind. I wonder if this is true for everyone.
When I check the song in my head, I can usually feel its connection to my attitude. I’ve been with my grandson for a few days, and he has favorites from my repertoire. When he brushes his teeth, I have to sing the Raffi song, “When you wake up in the morning and it’s quarter to one. You think you’ll have a little fun, you brush your teeth, Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.” When I tuck him into bed, I sing the lullaby “Tell me why.”
I love these songs, but my ear worm this morning comes from the hymns I sang in the choir loft on Sunday.
“Blest are They”
“Rejoice and be glad!
Blessed are you!
Holy are you.
Rejoice and be glad,
yours is the kingdom of God.”

A simple tune, a sacred message, not bad for a wake up call in the morning.
What songs become the background playlist for your life? Are they joyful?

Oh it is been a long while since I thought of Raffi songs. This morning my song as the faint sound of a bird chirping. It is finally warm enough here for a few feathered friends to sing. Their song made we think that spring will come and the world will turn from the current violence we are in. Thanks for you calm and peaceful posts. They help keep me steady these days.
Margaret, I love how your songs connect to your attitude. Hymns are great ear worms to have running through your head because they can set the tone for the day ahead. Bob
A song is so powerful! What a joy to drop into one –especially connected to a child — and let it color your day. Thank you, Margaret.
Hi Margaret: I had to smile at the Raffi song. Yes, we sang that also. But… all week I’ve had the song our choir sang last week:
I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
In the arms of my dear Savior
Oh, there are ten thousand charms.
I think some of us are blessed with music in our heads. I’m sure some do not have it. I agree, it is a great start to the day.
Margaret, thank you for sharing the songs running through your head today. I have been thinking a lot about songs and how they contribute to our motivation as well as our mood in my “new to me” role as an aquacise instructor! When I get a good playlist with songs that have not only a good-to-exercise-in-water beat as well as sing-along-qualities everyone smiles and listens rather than talking to their neighbor! Adults are just like kids in the way they need motivation to stay on target! The other day I had Carly Simon and Whitney Houston in the line-up and the voices almost drowned out the music! PLUS, the hour flew!
That’s so great that you are changing people’s lives with exercise. The playlist at Pilates is joyfully distracting from the pain I’m enduring.
Margaret, I remember that Raffi song! And I sing Tell Me Why to Ollie at bedtime. I’m there once a week when his brothers and folks have Cub Scouts. I often have songs running through my head and so appreciate the songs shared by this community. They are often new to me. Can’t wait to click on “Blest Are They.”
Oh, Margaret, what a beautiful post. I’ve been thinking about the songs that shape me and that I get stuck in my head, but I realize I need to listen to more music! I sing the Raffi tooth brushing song to Milo when I help him get ready for bed. He loved it the last time I was with him.
I’m listening to “Blest are They” now. Thank you!
Connecting music to attitude is spot on, Margaret. I listen to classical music on my way to and from work; it fills me with quiet strength. sometimes I imagine the story-moments of my existence somehow playing right there in the string, keys, and chords. I think about music as an incredible, God-given gift to humans. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys famously said, “Music is God’s voice.” As for ear worms, I sing in the choir at church and many of those songs frequently play in my head. Currently it’s “Revelation song,” with these lyrics:
Worthy is the
Lamb who was slain
Holy, holy is He
We sing a new song
To Him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat
Holy, holy, holy
Is the Lord, God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
praise to the King of Kings
You are my everything
And I will adore You
Songs that I sang in youth choir and when i was a young adult return to me often as well…I find myself back in time for a moment, in the energy of that music. More than anything the lyrics fill my soul with joy, amazement, a depth of gratitude I cannot even convey. This is the power of music… and, like you, I enjoy singing to and with my young grandchildren. I so appreciate your words and invitation to write on this musical theme, friend!
