Oh, how my students love Dot Day! Do you celebrate? Peter Reynolds is the brilliant creator of this amazing, phenomenal day. This year 1.7 million have registered to participate. That’s a lot of dots!
I wore my Dot Day skirt. We read The Dot (again) and watched The Dot video. This year a new song was released by Emily Dale. What a catchy tune! We sang along and kept singing as we made our dots. There is nothing more fun than painting on a Monday. My students experimented with mixing colors. They tried out new designs. Not one of them said they didn’t know what to draw. I love that about Dot Day. Vashti shows us that even a jab of a pencil is worthy.
You can still celebrate Dot Day. The official day is Sept. 15th but Peter tells us that it is Sept. 15th-ish. I say any day could be Dot Day. Make your mark. Make it matter.
Many resources are available on FableVision.

Happy Dot Day Margaret! Loved the videos. Great way to start the day 🙂
Love the dot day celebration! So much creativity in such a small mark.
Beautiful, & thanks for the music, too! Love the creative juices flowing…
I’ve never done Dot Day before. But I love that you pointed out that the SOL button IS a dot!
So much fun! The story made me smile – talk about inviting a student to have agency!
Love the song! Now I want to see your Dot Day skirt. I may have to try my hand at painting a dot before the day’s over. I haven’t painted in years, not even sure if I have any watercolors in the house.
I should have gotten a picture of me in the skirt. I tried to take a selfie, but it didn’t work. It’s just a poodle skirt of felt with multi-colored dots glued on. A friend made it for me. I hesitated to wear it but decided not to “Just Do It.” Everyone who saw me smiled. That was nice!
Margaret, I think what your students must have been totally engaged in the Dot Day project as evidenced by what I saw on the video. What program did you use for this video? I want to try and make a video presentation about the Summer Serenity Gallery. I started one with emaze but do you have other suggestions?
I used Animoto, easy and free. They give you the option to publish to YouTube. My blog site supports YouTube so I chose that option. Good luck with emaze. I want to try it, too.

I used to say the same thing: can’t draw a straight line with a ruler. My instructor thought I could draw when I took graphic design classes at a community college during my storm-cation. I knew I couldn’t and asked if I could use Photoshop to draw. He let me. Thing is, he and the students always saw something in my work. It took me until the end of the semester to see what they were seeing.
[…] post, I put a picture of Emily’s dot. One of the students brought up how happy we all were on Dot Day. I am grateful that I allowed them to have a day of pure creative […]
