I want to go on living even after my death! And therefore I am grateful to God for giving me this gift, this possibility of developing myself and of writing, of expressing all that is in me. I can shake off everything if I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.– ANNE FRANK
Exercise Faith, a poem reflection using words of Anne Frank
A grandiose idea
life after death
your own life continuing on
and on, like the cycle of nature,
seed, seedling, sprout, grow, die, rebirth.
This gift of words
life after death
your own life continuing on
and on, with words on paper
floating in clouds like rain
coming down, going up, coming down again.
Developing my most inner self
reflecting on events, ideas,
life after death
continuing on and on,
like monks in meditation, singing Om
breathing in, breathing out, breath of life.
Expressing all that is me
honors God in me
knowing life after death
continues on and on,
like a rainbow rising over the storm
shining its promise, eternally.
I shake it all off,
dust from the shelves,
throw compost on earth,
spread life after death
on and on, shaking off sorrows,
leaving only good soil, good growth,
good courage…reborn.
–Margaret Simon

And so, as we live our lives, the thoughts of living on are comforting. You’ve written that faith beautifully in this, Margaret.
Margaret, like minds are moving in a similar direction with the title for today’s piece. Mine is Execise of Faith but has a different angle than yours. Your line about the words floating in clouds is lovely. The words of Anne Frank are so inspiring.
Very thought provoking Margaret – from the quote to your poem.
Brilliant! Inspiring! This line especially struck me: “Expressing all that is me
honors God in me…” I never thought of expression like that – that it honors God. Art of all kinds does that, doesn’t it? Honors God. I love the Anne Frank quote. Beautiful post today, Margaret!
You have such a gift – such a poetic voice! What a way to honor God in you by sharing that gift with us! This is beautiful!!!
There is always so much beauty in you poems! Feeling a light breeze flowing through your lines as I read them. Beautiful.
This is beautiful, Margaret. I love, “shaking off sorrows, leaving only good soil, good growth, and good courage.” Isn’t that what we all strive for?
I love the idea of immortality through writing and Anne Frank’s words are so inspiring, even in their sadness. Beautiful post, Margaret.
