“Write a poem inspired by I Spy, the guessing game popular with kids during car rides and other long periods of downtime, in which the spy offers descriptive clues that hint at a visible object for other players to guess.”

I Spy
in the dome of the sky
a face
full and bright.I spy

a sphere
of golden mightI spy
smiling through the trees
a force
moving the night.–Margaret Simon
I spied that near-full moon just last night!
I was up late last night, & that ‘mysterious object’ that you are spying peeked through the trees, and through my window. I so often have extra energy around the almost-full moons. “I spy” is a favorite game!
oooooooooooooooooooooooooh, what a wonderful prompt! I need to tuck this one away for a rainy day. Love your I spy of things in the sky…..oh, my!
Absolutely a fun writing prompt, I want to tuck this away for my young writers to play with. 🙂
Love this prompt and your poetic response. Great photo as well!
Clever–simple and profound both! And the photo is gorgeous.
Love it! Can’t pick a favorite line because they are all perfect.
Wonderful poem, and a perfect photo to accompany! Did you take that? I really liked the last stanza and the opposition in your imagery – the moon is smiling, yet is also a force at the same time.
a force moving the night… I guess this is another way to write a riddle poem? Fun! And beautiful. Thank you, Margaret! xo
I Spy makes for fun poetry.
I like the playfulness of this poem–and the moon was glorious last night!
You moved me through your night sky, your moon, and your force–Lovely poem, thanks Maragaret
Margret! So simple and so powerful. I especially like the idea of the moon as a force–yes, I know it pulls the tides, but “a force that moves the night” is new (and it ain’t easy to write newly about the moon!)
This would be a good way to help students write more descriptively and obliquely also–on my list to try next year!
