When I sit at my computer wondering what I may offer to the Poetry Friday community, I turn to nature. Nature is abundant here in my parents’ home on a lake in Mississippi. My mother took a picture of six great egrets hanging out on the dock, hunkered against the cold wind. Playing with the idea of a haiku-a-day from Mary Lee Hahn, I imagine that these egrets wished for warmer temperatures.
There’s beauty and humor here. I love how haiku can turn Our motors over on a chilly morning.
Lovely, the image and words together, and they’re perched on the deck as if that’s where they were always supposed to be.
I like the light forward levity in your haiku, thanks Margaret; and Happy New Year!
I love your mom’s egret photo and your accompanying haiku. With a temperature of -14 this morning, I’m thinking of heading south as well. The birds up here are bundles of fluffed up feathers and the chickens are looking at me accusingly, as if holding me responsible for the cold! Brrr!
What a wonderful photo. I feel cold just looking at those birds. Liftoff indeed, how cold that must be.
Brrrrr, hunched up against the cold, I’d be pointing myself southbound too! 🙂
Lovely photo and haiku. Its humor warms up this frigid day. Of course, I know it’s been cold when 20 degrees now feels warm!
Love the photo and the haiku! Hate to see the egrets chilly. They DO hunch up, don’t they. The birds in FL are cold as well.
Margaret, when I saw this photo in the thumbnail of Heidi’s PF offerings, I said to myself, “This must be Margaret’.” Your poem and your mother’s photo make me think of warmth so I am glad that I am inside baking. Happy New Year!
Priceless photo and such inspiration for haiku. Happy New Year!
I want to point my beak southbound, too! It has been quite frigid up here! I hope you have enjoyed your time with your parents!
What a beautiful photo! May the birds and you stay warm this frigid season. Happy New Year!
What a treat to see those beautiful birds! Very healing 🙂 Thanks for sharing your special collaboration with us.
Nature always inspires. Your words and your mother’s photo are perfect together. I wonder how far south they’ll have to fly before they find some warmth! Happy New Year, Margaret!
I see music notes — a snippet of music captured in their perches!
Fantastic photo: rhythm and surprise in both the visual motif and in your words! Happy New Year, Margaret, and I look forward to more of your searching, clever ways with your poetry and with your students in 2018!
Oh, your parents must see such beauty. This photo is awesome, and I love your response, Margaret! Happy New Year!
They do look cold! What a great photo and a lovely nature haiku. Best wishes in the new year, Margaret!
