Yesterday I read Sally Donnelly’s post about choosing a color to represent this time. She quoted an artist who represented the 9/11 tragedy with the color blue. Read her post here.
I started thinking about the color I would pick, and it has to be green. This is the time of year when green appears in all its amazing shades in my backyard. The cypress trees are bursting with a bright neon green.

Live oak trees lose their leaves in the spring as new leaves emerge.

I am passing my stay-at-home time on my back deck, listening to wind chimes and watching for the occasional boat. And sometimes a poem comes. Using Irene Latham’s prompt from Laura Shovan’s #Waterpoemproject, I wrote this quick ditty.

I love every bit of this and most of all, the cypress. Its roots go deep in my childhood and accordingly deep in my soul.
That magnificent oak tree and the view from your deck are breathtaking. Thank you for these pics and your poetry.
I love all the sounds and images in your poem! And I love the idea of representing this time with the color green. It often feels ironic to have such anxiety and sadness as spring is moving in, but the inevitability of spring also makes things better. I wouldn’t have thought of green, but I think it is perfect.
Oh, how I wish we were further along, Margaret. I’m enjoying a green spring through your posts and poetry. There’s one tree downtown that I can see out our bedroom window. Every year it turns green first, long before the others. I’ve never managed to find it, I know its there, and it gives me hope.
I don’t know that I would have chosen green for this time – up here we’re all white and grays – but now that you’ve said it… I love it. This post brings hope. Just what I need!
With our true spring months away, I feel like as spring arrives the virus will recede. There’s no basis in reality for this, but it comforts me. We had 9-10 inches of snow last night, so right now white predominates. Your cypress tree is gorgeous!
Love your poem. I’m happy to be an inspiration to you today. I am so glad we write together here!
I am SO ready for the world to be a little greener. Maybe the leaves will shelter us. We’re covered with snow and slush from a spring dumping. Your poem’s fun– love the sound repetition.
