Spring is my favorite time of year
When the sky is blue and clear.
Birds are singing all around.
Flowers growing from the ground.
This verse was the first poem I remember writing. I was waiting for my mother to pick me up from my piano lesson and I was twirling around the tree in Miss Joe’s front yard. Maybe I was 12?
The words echo in my head today as spring is here. A week ago the cypress trees were still brown. Today they are bursting with bright green needles.
My friend Mary, who is a master gardener, sends me a photo every other day of flowers blooming. The fields that haven’t been mown are sparkling with purple and yellow wildflowers.

When I take my morning walk, the birds fill the page on my Merlin app.

Spring is my favorite time of year.

A friend that sends pictures of flowers is a friend indeed! What a gift – what a blessing to have someone who sends you a moment of blooming beauty. And such color, too. It’s like a smile no human can perform, so we have to leave it to the flowers. Gorgeous, and I love that you remember this poem.
Kim, I can send you pictures of flowers in the store! Sadly, none outside are blooming yet.
Margaret,
If I’ve made one change this month, it’s to pay more attention to our local birds. We have finches and sparrows and robins in our yard, but we also have a bunch of fat gray ring neck doves who have been devouring the feed. They are piggy birds! Even as a girl, you were a wonderful poet!
Like you, I am seeing the greening and blossoming of my world all around me. I think I love the transition from winter to spring, the drama that comes from bare trees suddenly (almost overnight) sporting leaves and flowers showing up everywhere! Later spring in my parts tend to be frequently covered in thick marine layer–which is no fun! I love that you have a friend who sends you photos of flowers blooming–what a treat!
Kim
You’re right. It’s the drama of a single day. I swear some flowers are growing right before my eyes.
Margaret, what a good rhyming poet you were at 12. I still have difficulty at rhyming. What a sweet friend you have. I’m glad that you are happy with your blooming spring and identifying your birds. I forget to use my Merlin app. Our wildflowers won’t start until the end of April and into May. The orchid is a pretty, pastel yellow. I like the lemon center. Hey, maybe I’ll turn those last 2 sentences into a poem. Thank you for your inspiration and your daily writing this March-1 more day.
Well, isn’t that gorgeous! I love the focus on that blooming orchid photo, and the birds! Merlin heaven it sounds like. What a wonderful cheery post today. I love spring too.
