My 2015 One Little Word is Reach. Here are some images of my weekend in Atlanta where I reached for my phone a few times to take these shots. I follow Kim Douillard. She posts lots of pictures. Her blog title is Thinking through my Lens which is exactly what she does, photos and reflections. She posts a weekly challenge. This week’s challenge was Outside. We were in Atlanta for a wedding, and the weather was gorgeous, sunny and cool. On Saturday morning, we took a walk outside. We followed the mother-of-the-groom’s niece, her husband, and their young children, and together we found a park.
Another Reach for me is a paleo diet. I have been vegetarian (actually, pescetarian) for about four years. My daughter started a paleo diet and wanted to take me along with her. What a stretch! I had to add some meat back in to get enough protein, but I am particular about it. For example, New Year’s cabbage rolls contained grass-fed beef.
Stacey Shubitz of the Two Writing Teachers has made a paleo Pinterest board here.
Maggie and I went on a paleo shopping event on Monday to Whole Foods. This is a 25-mile trek. We came home with loads of vegis, almond yogurt, fruits, salmon, and coconut cream. My cat was curious about all the plastic bags and new smells.
The biggest reach for paleo me is my morning cereal and crackers and hummus afternoon snack. I am having eggs, turkey bacon, and avocado for breakfast and nut mix for a snack. Fruit is always a good choice. There are problems, too, with eating out. I have to ask a ton of questions: Is your soup cream based? How is the fish cooked? So far, most servers are willing to answer and explain. I think more and more people are becoming conscious of what they eat.
I’m not sure how long this diet will last. I haven’t lost any weight that I can tell. But challenges are good for us, and being more knowledgable and more concerned about what we eat is important to leading a healthy life.
Beautiful pictures!!! I have to check out that blog! Good luck with paleo eating!! I’m interested to hearing what you think about it. 🙂
Looks like you really did have a gorgeous weekend! The sky was beautiful in Atlanta!
Like Michelle, I’m anxious to hear about how the paleo diet goes. My boys have recently become vegetarians. I’m not a huge meat eater, but do eat chicken and fish. I don’t think they are getting enough protein, especially given that they are athletes and burn a lot of calories. I wonder if paleo would be a better alternative for them. You will have to keep us posted
.
The diet cuts out carbs and dairy. A lot like gluten-free. Seems like athletic boys would need the carbs.
Love the rainbow around the sun – I took a shot of the half dome in Yosemite with a similar effect.
Love that you are on the new diet! I want to meet soon so we can catch up. I bet Atlanta was fun.
Love you and have a great day! Jen
So many ways to reach! The pictures are amazing ( iPhone cameras can create cool effects) and a paleo diet, hmmm. I’m going to look at Stacey’s page. Love your kitty’s expression amongst the veggies.
Looks like your cat is just as interested in a paleo diet as you, Margaret! I have no idea what this is..so research is on my agenda. Love those sky pictures!
I didn’t know either. It seems to be the rage, though. There is even an app to tell you if something is paleo or not. The rules are hard to figure out. I haven’t given up my latte, though.
Wow, good luck on your new Paleo journey, Margaret! I hope it leads to a happier, healthier you! This sure is one great way to live your OLW!
I love Kim’s blog and marvel at her mix of images and writing but I don’t often take up her weekly challenges. I want to but I don’t seem to.
As for your images- LOVE THEM!!!!! and your reach at the Paleo diet is a bit beyond me but I’ve been making serious changes in my diet with support from my nutritionist, who’s been so great at one-on-one and supporting the changes I’ve been selecting. Weight is going down but very slowly. It’s not going up 🙂
Not going up! is what I am striving for. The older I get, the harder it is to maintain. Having my daughter cheering me on helps.
Good luck with the Paleo journey! This is the recipe for my favorite chocolate cake of all time: http://ameessavorydish.com/paleo-flourless-chocolate-cake/
Who knew that REACH could lead you to Whole Foods!
Thanks for the recipe. Tonight Maggie is making nut bars. I don’t think I would go to all this trouble, but she loves to cook.
Of course I love the sky pics, Margaret, & the others too. Glad you had such a nice weekend. It’s great to hear how you’re interpreting your OLW-as a challenge, or reaching high (maybe that’s the same?)
Sometimes our OLW finds us and we don’t even know why. I am inspired by the sky, much like you.
Love the cat exploring the groceries! I didn’t know that dairy products are not on the paleo diet…but then again, I don’t know all that much about the diet. It will be interesting to see your feelings after trying it a bit!
Kim
I have a friend who did Paleo for medical reasons for a while. How did your body react to the meat? It’s hard for me to believe but I’ve been vegan now for a little over four years now. Gosh time flies…but I don’t have an interest in eating meat again…yet. Best to you!
The clouds. I love them. I am trying to upload more photos on my photo blog this year. And the paleo diet…interesting.
Good luck with the diet! I’ve been gluten free for almost 3 years. Initially, I lost about 10 pounds, but have gradually gained it all back 😦 I love all your photos, especially those cottony cirrus clouds!
