Over at Today’s Little Ditty, Michelle has posted the wrap-up of nothing poems from this month’s ditty challenge posted by Douglas Florian. I have a poem in the collection.
I challenged my students by sharing Diane Mayr’s nothing poem. She used anaphora, a repeated line, “Nothing, but…” This prompt generated a lot of thought. I was excited by the results.
Today, I have a dual post: I celebrate the nothing poems my students created and add them to the Poetry Friday Ditty collection. The digital images were created on Canva.
Kielan’s poem is about a classmate, Erin.
Nothing but rainbow narwhals
Nothing but rainbow butterfly unicorn kittens
Nothing but unicorns
Nothing but love
Nothing but a helpful heart
Nothing but imagination
These are beautiful and I love the range of product and process.
Fantastic! I wonder if one of the reasons Douglas Florian’s challenge this month is so popular is because everyone can relate to nothing in one way or another. I so enjoyed reading these student interpretations. Andrew seems a poet after your own heart, Margaret. Lynzee and I have something in common in that we both love morning birdsong and scrambled eggs! There is no caption for the next poem, but I really like the visual approach. Reminds me of Roget and His Thesaurus. Kaiden’s is one that I think MANY kids can relate to (mine included!), and Kielan’s tribute poem warms my heart. Thank you all for joining in this month’s challenge!
Love these poems, Margaret. I’ve pinned this post so I remember to use this when we write poetry. And I need to get my high schoolers using Canva. I have some creative ones who would love this.
I’ve said this before, but think it is wonderful that you use some of the mentor poems of others on PF to help your students see a wider world of poetry. These are thoughtful and lovely, Margaret.
wonderful poems and very talented poets 🙂 Thank You for sharing these with us very beautiful and talented
Wonderful, Margaret–I love that you bring these poetry friday challenges to your students, and that your students rise and soar!
Nothing but imagination! Love that 🙂 Your students really ran with this assignment. All of them have something special.

scrambled eggs”
Made my day! Thanks for sharing these Margaret!
These are so wonderful! Definitely something to celebrate!
As always your students just take off with your inspiration. Just two words bring so much!
So much to say about “nothing”! As always, in awe of the work you and your kids do.
It’s amazing to see the variety of ways that the students expressed themselves. Thanks for sharing.
These are wonderful, Margaret. I really love “nothing but imagination.” Thanks so much for sharing your students’ amazing work with us.

Margaret, I always love how you present your students with challenges and that they choose to express themselves digitally. Nothing but a helpful heart-this is the way I see your classroom, a room full of helpful hearts.
I was the rainbow kitten unicorn girl — I’m glad she has a friend. 🙂 Nothing but beauty here!
