This week was Dr. Seuss week at two of my three schools. Each day had a theme. The walls were covered in Seuss-inspired art and quotes. At one school, the librarian was in costume each day.
On Friday, I sat next to Chloe, a 2nd grader, to help her write her second post for the March Slice of Life Challenge. She wanted to write about Dr. Seuss week. She is a huge fan. As I looked at blue feathers circling her head, I knew this was going to be a fun slice to help her with. She told me that her favorite book is “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.” Using some of the ideas from this book, I suggested she write a poem.
We collaborated on this poem but most of the words came from Chloe. I just typed them into a poetic looking form.
Dr. Seuss books are lots of fun.
You can read them in the sun.Dr. Seuss books are the best thing ever.
They can trick you. They are clever.Dr. Seuss books are kind of silly.

Read.across america week is one thing I miss from teaching elementary! Your thing wig is awesome. Where did you buy it???
I bought it at a shop in New Orleans. I think it cost all of $4. Ha!
Awesome! I will have to search for one
I love that Chloe used a mentor text to inspire her writing. Dr. Seuss certainly is a fun one!
You have me regretting (again) that I could not participate in Read Across America night at our school this year (other commitments). I also admit, with great shame, to epic failure with incorporating anything Seuss into my fourth grade classroom this week. I love your student’s poem and will head over to read it again and comment. Most of all, I love your joyful, fun, wacky photos! I’m sure the kids really appreciated that enthusiasm as well.
Love celebrating Dr. Seuss! Did you know he and I come from the same place? Springfield, MA. Mulberry Street, from his book, is an actual place in my hometown. Happy Reading!
This week always makes me miss my elementary days. What a fun day for all of you. I left a comment on Chloe’s post…in rhyme or course!
I did see a Cat in the Hat lady leaving the Library this week! Poem On!
Thanks for sharing Chloe’s poem and post with us. I’m glad Dr. Seuss was born the first of March… just the right time for fun celebrations at school.
School was cancelled because of the storm yesterday, but we have a plenty of fun planned for the coming weeks. I love Chloe’s poem, especially her advice to write a book!
