I was walking down the hall when he saw me. His eyes lit up and he directed me over to the wall to see his writing. He read, “I wish it would rain ice cream!”
He points to the words then the picture. “See all my ice cream? That’s my French fries. Rainbow pizza. A pancake,” he said with a giggle.
This new writer was so excited to share. I asked him what his second sentence said and he exclaimed “yum!” in a don’t-you-know-that-word voice.
Before I walked away, I said, “Keep writing!”
I love writing with the little ones! There is so much joy in the journey! I think your response to him was exactly right!
You captured the delight of this young writer! Nothing beats sharing writing with a receptive audience.
LOVE! This is the best – look at all that enthusiasm – and all that ice cream. YUM.
This feels like such a victorious moment for him. I love the innocence of a child who is excited to share his writing.
I used to love strolling the hallways and discovering the work being done by the kids throughout the school. Your words today inspired nostalgia for one of the few things I miss about being a teacher. Love his drawings and enthusiasm!
Margaret,
Reading your slice and the young student’s wish for Ice cream rain reminded me of the book a href=”https://goo.gl/4zSCsM”>Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball by a href=”http://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Judi-Barrett/1103891″>Judi Barett
Kids are so full of imagination 🙂 Where do we lost them? Is it when we mark study room as a wrong answer for a as place to homework as when making Spanish exam we had decided that the bedroom is the correct answer? Or is it when we FAIL to accept multiple students’ voice of a vunerable girl as alternate interpretation to our “feminist views” of a girl achieving freedom when discussing James Carol Oat’s “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Yes, I did wonder if the lady who thought the story is about girl getting her horizons expended needed to have her head examined.
Thank you for seeing the students and listening to them. Sharing their stories is icing on the cake.
Best wishes.

I love the enthusiasm in this post. And I kind of wish it would rain ice cream too.
Oh, this is the best! I love kid writing and what they imagine. Thanks for sharing this.
What a delightful moment — for him and for you. I love that he added more foods… more ideas to write, right?
There is nothing like a young writer excited to share his work! Raining ice cream? That is the kind of rain I wouldn’t complain about. 🙂
