I borrowed this list poem idea from a fellow Slicer: Meandering Maya
Why I Write: Slice 12 0f 31
I write while I’m doing the laundry,
or cooking a meal,
or grading papers.
I write as my dog curls up in my lap
(I love the comfort of his warm curls.)
I write to show students how.
I write to show students they can.
I write because I need courage.
I write because it gives me courage,
and a voice, and a reason for
writing.
I write to tell you about my life.
I write to tell me about my life.
I write to discover a new world,
a new character,
or to build a story,
or to find a story.
I write to impress,
yes,
I said it.
I write to have something to show for it.
I write to connect to others.
I write to take myself away from it all.
I write to belong.

I love this poem…I feel nervous about writing poetry…but sometime this month I want to put myself out there.
Margaret- I write for many of the same reasons you do. Self-doubt seems to be my biggest obstacle. I keep asking myself if I’m really a writer or just a dreamer. I’m going to look for your book Blessen when it comes out! Congratulations!
Linda,
I read your post and tried to reply but my phone froze up. Dreaming is all part of it. You just have to plug along and someday the dream may become reality. I’m excited about Blessen but daunted as well. It’s like having a child. Keep writing.
Writing is fun and it does get you thinking about deeper thoughts!
Awwww…shucks, I was your literary muse.
I love it. I love the repetition with the twist of turning inward and outward:
I write because I need courage.
I write because it gives me courage,
and a voice, and a reason for
writing.
Yea! You go!!

Great list of reasons to write. I like the “to belong” best. That is a big part of why I write.
Margaret,
You wove your writing reasons into a lovely list poem. I may try this too. Thanks for the inspiration. I’ll be sure to check out the inspiration you found at Meandering Maya’s blog. ! Theresa
Oh yes, exactly! Great poem … making me want to write one, too!
(oh hey, just noticing we’re both “Misty Look” girls!)
